Couch to 5K - Starts August 15
Couch to 5K will give you all the tools you need to finish your first 5K, or your first 5K in a while. During this 9 week program we will have guests stopping by to keep us on track. Josh Gilbert, from Gilbert Chiropractic, will demonstrate stretches to keep your body moving and healthy. Staff from Fleet Feet will help you figure out the best type of shoes to keep your feet fit. All this will be preparing you for the Vinton Fall Fest 5K run/ walk on October 10, 2009.You will receive a training schedule to fit your person goals for the 3.12 mile, 5K. Registration fee includes a Couch to 5K t-shirt, personalized training schedule, and registration fee for the Vinton Fall Fest 5K. All are welcome and together we will cross the finish. Olde Towne Petersburg Trip - August 25
Old Towne Petersburg is steeped in history and culture. Your visit to three museums will bring the city's past alive through art, architecture and Civil War artifacts. The Old Blandford Church of Bristol Parish, erected in 1735 is one of six known buildings where every stained glass window is by Louis Tiffany. Center Hill Museum is a symbol of grandeur of 19th century aristocracy and a outstanding example of Greek Revival & Colonial architecture. A guided tour will reveal The Mansion's history with stories of famous visitors. The Siege Museum tells the story of how the people of Petersburg lived before, during and after the Civil War with emphasis on the ten month siege of Petersburg. Fee includes breakfast biscuit, all tour fees, transportation & escort. Lunch is own your own at one of the many quaint restaurants in Old Towne. Bus departs Hollins Library at 6:00 AM and returns at 8:15 PM; departs Brambleton Center at 6:30 AM and returns as 8:45 PM. Payment at registration. Register Online Here

Memorial for Fallen Soldier to be Built at Shell Park
This week Roanoke County Parks staff is constructing a memorial at Clower Field within Darrel Shell Park to honor the lives of County Residents Jesse Clowers Sr. and Jesse Clowers Jr. The Clowers family was inluential to the success of the County's athletic programs. Both father and son passed away suddenly in recent years. Clowers Jr. was the first County resident killed in Iraq. The memorial will include a monument to both family members, benches, and a paved plaza. Clowers filed was dedicated last fall.
