New Info Posted About Geocacheing in May

The Amazing County Treasure Hunt, Caching in on Scenery will be held Saturday, May 15th.
Discover the "hidden jewels" of Roanoke County and Geocache your way to some amazing "gems."Whether you’re an experienced geocacher or new to this fun hobby, you’re invited to wind your way through the countryside picking up gems to add to your team’s bounty. Travel by vehicle and on foot to some of the most beloved spots in Roanoke County using a handheld GPS to guide your way. This FREE event will begin at Roanoke County’s Garst Mill Park (2599 Willowlawn Street, Roanoke VA 24018). The event will run from 12:00 noon until 5:00 PM. Registration will run from 10:00 AM until 11:45 AM. A limited number of GPS units will be available to those who do not bring their own and a $150 deposit will be required for their use. Deposit can be either a personal check or cash and will be returned upon the safe return of the GPS unit. Instruction on how to operate the units will be held at 11:00 AM (a geocaching tutorial is also available at www.geocaching.com).
Scenic and /or historic sites within Roanoke County will be the destinations for this second annual treasure hunt. Longitudes and latitudes will be given and you will have from noon until 5 PM to complete the treasure hunt. We strongly suggest there be two people per car, (at least one navigator). All participants will end up at Camp Roanoke for a final tallying of scores and prizes. Everyone must return no later than 5 PM on event day. FREE Martial Arts Class Saturday at Green Ridge!

Join us at 9:30am on Saturday, March 20 for a FREE Aikido martial arts class at Green Ridge Recreation Center. Aikido teaches self defense using efficient body movements, not strength to redirect the force of an attack and difusing it. Increase awareness, flexibility and balance while training your mind and body. The class will be followed at 11:00am by a FREE demo. Children 18 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Green Ridge KidZone Expanded for Members

As our membership grows, Green Ridge Recreation Center is working to meet customer demand by expanding KidZone services for our members. Effective Monday, March 22 we are opening up additional KidZone space from 5:30pm to 8:00pm on Monday through Thursday. This expansion will accomodate extra room for potty trained 3-year-olds through eight-year-olds. Members only can utilize this expanded service by dropping off your kids as you normally would at the KidZone area. Once our capacity is reached in the KidZone area, additional kids will be taken to another area of the building for entertaining, age-appropriate activities. The two hour limit on KidZone participation is still in place.

Friday - School's Out Program at Green Ridge

County Schools are out Friday - Send the kids to Green Ridge for a day of fun! $35 for full day and $20 for half day. Call 777-6315 to register! Join us for a fun day at the new Green Ridge Recreation Center when Roanoke County and/or City Schools are out. Swimming (time varies), gym time (varies), arts, crafts, and games are all planned for the day.Register for morning, afternoon, or all day. Morning snack and afternoon snack will be provided. Please pack a sack lunch with no glass containers if staying from 12-1. Please register in advance as spots will go quickly!

Nascar Pit Crew Trip - Needs 10 Participants!

Join us on April 20 for an exciting NASCAR based day-trip to Mooresville, North Carolina. This is the home of Pit Instruction and Training, a state of the art facility owned by Jeff Hammond of Fox Sports and former pit crew chief. Your behind-the-scenes tour gives you an insiders look at how a championship pit crew functions and how they choreograph their exciting pit stops. You will be able to ask the crew members questions and also handle the jack and air wrench during this interactive stop. Also, included is a stop at JR Motorsports, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s Nationwide Series shop. Your afternoon concludes at Memory Lane Museum which houses the largest private collection of retired Nascar and vintage race cars in existence! Fee includes breakfast biscuit, step on guide, all tour fees, escort and transportation! Lunch is on your own at Lancaster's BBQ, well known for its BBQ and other southern dishes. Bus departs Brambleton Center at 6:30 AM and returns at 8:30 PM; departs Green Ridge Recreation Center at 7:00 AM and returns at 8:00 PM. Green Ridge Earns Development Award

The Virginia Economic Developers Association (VEDA) announced the selection of Roanoke County as a winner of the 2010 Community Economic Development Awards for a municipality with the population of 40,001 and 100,000 people. Nominated by Doug Chittum, Director of Economic Development, Roanoke County, the submitted project touched on all four categories of the CEDA award, incorporating Business Retention/Expansion, Community Development, Business Attraction, and Community Involvement. Roanoke County’s featured project was the Green Ridge Recreation Center, a publicly-owned and developed multi-generational facility designed to anchor a proposed new business park and serve the growing needs of the community and region. Not just another recreation center, this facility will serve as a catalyst for new economic development opportunities throughout the entire Roanoke Valley.
